Album cover inspiration.

I like the look of this album cover as I feel it has a meaning and one that the viewer has to think about in relation to the photo and name of the album. The image is different to most other album covers and would be hard to recreate for my cover mainly due to the setting of the photo.

I chose this album cover from the Killers because of the relation between the album title and the background image. The arm within the photo takes a second look to identify as it is blended with the woodland. The album cover would also be hard to recreate and would take a lot of editing with a number of different images.

I chose this album cover firstly because of my song choice which is on this song list and also because of the cover. It would be easy to re-create however using a man smoking, as this cover was, it could be criticised. I like how the title is on an angle with a white background making it stand out over the image.

This simple album from The Black Keys I found interesting because of the stand out image of the bird and the colour linked neat looking title. I think the cover has a unique look and would be relatively easy to recreate however I don’t feel making a similar album cover to this is right for my band and the image I’m trying to create.

This album cover stood out to me because of its bright colours and arty design, dissimilar to any of Kaiser Chiefs other album covers. The title 'medieval future relates to the background image and the Kaiser Chiefs logo standing out make the album identifiable.

This is one of my favourite album covers by the Killers and I like the idea of have the band member floating. This would take time the recreate however I feel the effect the image is worth it. This would also be good for a new band as the audience would be able to see the band members, therefor making them identifiable in th future.

I like the look of this album cover because of its detailed design which relates to the title of the album. This would be hard to recreate as without professional looking art I don't think the cover would work.

This album cover stands out to most out of all the album covers I have chosen because of the vibrant colours. Also the album title relates to the image, being souvenir and a stick of rock being portrayed as the souvenir. Also the fact that is it open I feel portrays them offering it to the viewer. In this way offering the album for the viewer to buy. I also like the way the title is actually in the stick of rock which would be hard to recreate.

This is more of a simple album cover from the Kaiser Chiefs showing each band member with their faces clearly visible. This would work well with my album cover as I need to make my band identifiable to the target audience.

I like this album because of its unique look using a strong background image with the egg timer and patterns softened on top. Then showing the band name underneath in white making it stand out. I think the colours in this album covering the whole image make it different to most other albums. This would be easy to recreate however finding a strong enough background image would be difficult.

This album from Two Door Cinema Club is typical of their unique 'indie' album covers. I like how the title is linked with the image going through the models legs. This cover would be hard to recreate with such a complex image however the idea of the text I could take forward in my designs.

The cover from the Arctic Monkeys is more of a subdued, simple design. Again with the bands logo in the top left corner standing out on a black background makes the album identifiable. This would be easy to recreate however I feel is too simple for my target audience.

I like this album cover by the vaccines because of the way the image is sectioned of in the middle of the cover with the band name above it. I feel this looks good and would appeal to my target audience if I was to use a relative image in the middle.

This cover stands out for me because of the background image and monochrome colour scheme. However I think this only works because of the image which would be hard to recreate.

I like this album cover a lot because of the simple design combined with the colours in the oil pattern. This design would be easy to recreate and I think attract my target audience. I would however have to use text to make the album recognisable as the X as seen on this cover is associated with The xx.

This album cover by Pink Floyd called The Dark Side Of The Moon is one of Rock music's most iconic album covers. The refracting prism is used turning the single light into a number of different colours. This is one of the simple yet best design out of the ones I have chosen. This would be easy to recreate however the idea is already with Pink Floyd.

The digipack.

Digipacks usually included some or all of the following aspects:

Front - Recognition of the band for the buyer, could be a logo, the band name or an identifiable object that relates to the band or artist.

Spine - Gives the digipack recognition of only the side is visible when being stacked in a certain way.

Back - usually contain the song names.

Membership postcard/flier - gives the buyer more for their money and could inform them and be used as advertisement.

Lyric section - Usually in a seperate booklet a lyric section gives the buyer a different desirable factor.

Disk impression - needed to hold the disc to prtect it from damage. Usually on the right in a four side digipack or in the middle in a six side digipack.

Band info section/booklet - gives the buy more to look at and also gives the band/artist to inform its target market directly.

Free image/poster - gives the buyer more for their money increasing there satisfaction. Also increases the chance of them buying the digipack ranther that dowloading the album.

Location.

The location for filming will be in a range of places. For all of the performance shot I will be using a house garage. The location of this will be in Hinckley, Leicester. I will be traveling via car to get to this location. I think this will give a 'new band' environment and one which the audience will be able to relate too. I want to portray an up and coming band that are starting from the basic room set. A band they cant currently affort a nice posh recording studio but instead use what they have available with no real design to the room. I think this will bring a focus on the band members. Also this brings the costs of the production down as I will be able to use the room for free instead of a costly practise room or studio.
Using all the bands own equipment will give us more freedom. I will be able to create the garage band scene with amps and cable scattered around the room. With the simple mise en scene of the garage making the band and the instuments stand out will work well and be an authentic was of portraying in the band.

I will focus on different shots within the music video to bring even more of a focus of the band members and instruments using a variety of different shots and filming methods. I want to use mostley moving shots within the video to keep it instresting for the viewer meaning there is always something happening within the shots, but contrast this with a few still shots throughout.

About Animatics.

(Animatic)

An animatic is simply your storyboard in video form, the purpose of an animatic is to allow you to judge how effective your video is prior to filming and it allows you to identify sequences which might not work and whether your editing is quick enough.

Video overview.

My music video is both peformance and narraticve based. The performance will be important, especially for a new band, to allow the audience to see each band member. Close ups of the band will give the audience recognition of how they look. Most of the close ups will be of the lead singer as he is the star image. My music video will switch between the narratives and performance throughout and the clips will be short and fast.

I will use mainly amplification and illustation in my music video. I think this is important because my target audience are intrested in the instruments as well the lyrics. The band will also be used in the narative parts of my video. They will be shown in normal life outside of the performance. I have found this also intrests the audience as they enjoy getting to see what the artists are like when they are not performing and feel they are getting an insight into there lifes.

I will use a range of different shots such as high angle, low angle, panning e.t.c. to keep the audience intrested. Close ups of the lead singer will amplify the lyrics and close ups of the drums and guitars will amplify the music. I will also use scenes such as the San Fransisco sign to illustrate the lyrics.

Lyrics.

These are the lyrics my main artist (vocals) will be lip syncing in my music video. I think it is important that my vocalist sings out the words whilst filming instead of just miming them. This will make it look more realistic and therefore create a stronger amplification. I printed these lyrics out because even though I have asked him to learn the song through watching their current video on YouTube and downloading the mp3 onto him phone, sometime you can mishear the lyrics and think its a different word/line. Therefore giving him this will ensure he is lip syncing all the correct words.

Lyrics to Fake Tales Of San Francisco : Fake Tales of San Francisco
Echo through the room
More point to a wedding disco
Without a bride or groom
There's a super cool band yeah
With their trilbys and their glasses of white wine
And all the weekend rockstars in the toilets
Practicing their lines

I don't want to hear you
(Kick me out, kick me out)
I don't want to hear, you know
(Kick me out, kick me out)
I don't want to hear you
(Kick me out, kick me out)
I don't want to hear you
I don't want to hear your...

Fake Tales of San Francisco
Echo through the air
And there's a few bored faces at the back
All wishing they weren't there

And as the microphone squeaks
A young girl's telephone beeps
Yeah she's dashing for the exit
And she's running to the streets outside
Oh you've saved me, she screams down the line
The band were fucking wank
And I'm not having a nice time

I don't want to hear you
(Kick me out, kick me out)
I don't want to hear, you know
(Kick me out, kick me out)

Yeah but his bird thinks it's amazing, though
So all that's left
Is the proof that love's not only blind but deaf

He talks of San Francisco, he's from Hunter's Bar
I don't quite know the distance
But I'm sure that's far
Yeah I'm sure that's pretty far

And yeah, I'd love to tell you all my problem
You're not from New York City, you're from Rotherham
So get off the bandwagon, and put down the handbook
Yeah, yeah, yeah

Get off the bandwagon and put down the handbook
Get off the bandwagon and put down the handbook
Get off the bandwagon and put down the handbook
Get off the bandwagon and put down the handbook

Yeah

Logo.

I made a logo for my band The Door Jammers to give them an identity and there for a recognition symbol. Being a band and especially a new band I think it was important to include the band name. I chose this font because I feel it relates to the style of the band. It has a self drawn look giving a creative image and I think this works well with my indie band. Also I decided to keep the font black and plain with a white background to keep with the monochrome colour scheme and also so that the logo stands out on most conventional backgrounds either on a poster or album cover.

Intresting Video.

A music video I spotted whilst on YouTube. This video caught my intresest because of its disjuncture and narrative. I already knew the song and had heard it before but had never seen the video so I had an idea of what i thought the lyrics meant and then could evaluate how the video changed my views. I think this was interesting and made me this about my music video from a different point of view.

The video obviously uses a lot of narrative and acting. I think this looks good and makes the video interesting however for my genre and band I don't think this type of video would work.
First of all the audience as I have found out want to see the band members and the instruments close up.
Secondly the narrative would be very hard to re create without professional actors and a large budget. Also I think for this type of music video the narrative has to be perfect or the video just doesn't work.

Twitter Feed

(I set up a twitter feed for my band.)

UK Tribes

This shows the different 'tribes' and groups of people in the UK and how the different tribes are connected. For example the 'Indie Scenesters' which relates to my music video genre is shown to link to 'trendies' 'young alts' 'townies' 'geeks' 'hipsters' and 'craft kids'. This shows that my target audience could spread much further that just the 'indie' market.

Thursday 13 September 2012

Colour Scheme.

I have chosen a predominately monochrome colour scheme as I feel this will appeal to my target audience. I also think that a stand out colour in album cover and poster will set my designs apart from others and using it in a single part of the layout, either the logo, title or background e.t.c will create a unique looking design. However it will be important to concentrate on the use of the stand out colour to make this work.

Audience Profile.

Charlie is 19 and lives in London. He has taken a gap year after his A-Levels and is working at a HMV music shop in the centre of the town. The shop stocks a whole range of music CD's. He had been going to the shop as a customer for several years before applying for a job there during his A-Levels. He has a particular interest in Indie Music, including indie rock artists such as Kaiser chiefs and also Arctic Monkeys. Working in a music shop he sponges music knowledge in all genres, whether its up and coming bands and artists or popular music such as Two Door Cinema Club. He regularly goes to see his favourite artists when he can and takes inspiration from there styles. He likes meeting up with friends, and travels to see his old friends in Leicestershire as much as possible. He is always using social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter where he also follows his favorite bands to keep up to date with there music, he finds out about a lot of the gigs he goes to through these sites. He attended Reading festival last year and is planning to go again with all of his college friends next year. His fashion reflects his favored style of music taste. When working he wears a uniform given to him buy the shop manager which he customizes to his own style. He tends to buy a lot of music magazines also where he pics up a lot of style inspiration and new songs. He uses Spotify to listen to music when he is out and about and pays £10 a month to have this software on his phone. When watching music video he tends to use YouTube either on his laptop or sometimes on his mobile. He plans to go to university in London and to hopefully develop his interest in music studying media. He is also good friends with an up and coming band in London and often goes to his concerts.

Pitch.

I have decided to create an 'Indie' genre music video. My target audience ranges from 16-25 due to the age of the band members. They will be a conventional four piece band including two guitars, a bass guitar, drums and vocals. I have chosen the song 'Fake Tales Of San Francisco' by the Arctic Monkeys. My colour scheme is monochrome as will be shown in the bands album cover and through parts of the video.
Finally my bands name will be 'The Door Jammers'.

Tuesday 11 September 2012

THE BAND.

These are the four member of the band that will be starring in my music video, from left to right their name are;

Paul (guitar), Kingy (vocals and guitar), Ross (drums), Dec (bass guitar).

Having the band members and a band name has created an image for my band. The audience will be creating a link between the two which I will have to focus on through the use of my digipak, poster and also my music video.

They are all aged between 17-19 which I feel is importand to potray the modern indie rock band image but still look mature enough to appeal to an older taarget market of - 30. Their style of clothing fits the genre therefore making chosing outfits for the music video will be much easier. Also as they have all their own instruments I will not have to organise the use of guitars and drums.

Research.

I usually find a lot of songs through watching bmx edits. This song by the black keys used in Daniel Sandovals edit I found when the edit came out but have never actually watched the video. Therefore I wanted to see the music video 'lonely boy' to see how it differed from my perspective of it.

I found that the video for the song was much different than I had perseived and much different than any other music video I had seen before. I found the video entertaining, however it got boring after the second time. I think this type of one shot muic video would be disjuncture to my music genre, and would'nt intrest my target market as much as seeing a full band playing the song. Therefore I wont be re creating a similar video to this one.

Moodboard

Band Name.

the door jammers.

After eliminating a number of different names I had thought of but didn’t like I eventually narrowed it down to just a few include 'the door jammers', I have decided on this as the name for my band. I think is fits well with the genre of my band and also after asking a number of people what they thought about the name they agree.

I think this name will work well when I am creating an identification for the band include the important text that is used for the name or creating an identifiable logo for the band. It will be important for this to stand out at 'the door jammers' allowing the audience to make a connection. I will look at a number of different ideas i could use and then chose one I feel best fits the band and genre.

Making A Music Video With No Budget.

Director Jordan Bahat showing that an amazingly good music video can be made even with a very small budget.

Director: Jordan Bahat
Cinematographer: Kris Carrillo
Production Designer: Vera Neykov
Wardrobe: Hannah Hooper
Editor: Jordan Bahat
Colorist: Brian Gonosey
Color Provided By: Electric Entertainment
Executive Producer: Jordan Bahat
Producers: Chevy Chen / Sloane Hayes-Skala
Production Co: Toy Human

"My feeling on performance in videos is... more often than not it's a necessary element. And when you begrudgingly wedge performance into a video, the audience can tell. So it's important to embrace performance -- to find a way to really make it feel integrated into the world of the video.

There really is not a whole lot of budget left in music videos -- so in a sense your restrictions are par for the course. At the same time, since all videos simply live on the internet (by and large), there aren't restrictions either.

I think it's important to respect the budget/gear available and to try and be creative within those means. I think that's something that the current generation of upcoming directors always have to keep in mind. The worst thing in the world is being forced to preface a screening with an explanation of your means of production... There is always a good video to be made

Productions made from very little money but still amazing quality:

As for lip synching... I normally just ask the artist to practice singing along at a variety of frame-rates for sync playback (25FPs & 50FPS normally). For performance videos where I want a lot of umph from the band, I playback REALLY REALLY LOUD... and when possible, I make sure that the drum kit is LIVE (not deadened or prop). As long as the drums are live and playback is really loud, the band becomes convinced that they're playing for real. They stop indicating and start performing."  (Jordan Bahat)

Music Video Possible Song Choice.

Name of track: Nashville
Artist: The Lions

This song by 'The Lions' doesn’t currently have its own music video. The Lions are a relatively new band with only two released songs. I think the release of a music video would boost their recognition dramatically. With a good performance video a bands name and song can spread rapidly as this I have found is mainly what the target market look for, wanting to see all the band members and instruments.

Music Video Analysis THREE

Name of track: Fake Tales Of San Francisco
Artist: Arctic Monkeys

Genre: Indie Rock
Characteristics: .Artist/band/star image show throughout the video
                            .Usually has a narrative
.Close-ups of the band are common

Relationship between lyrics and visuals?
The lyrics are about a group of people going to San Francisco and finding out that it not as great as all the 'tales' they have heard about it. The visuals relate to this as they show a group of people being in San Francisco, also the visuals almost act out the lyrics at some part. In the tube-chop below the lyrics are amplified by the visuals says 'hunters bar' on a sign'. In conjunction with this there clips of the band performing live. I nearly all of this clips the 'star image' Alex Turner is illustrating the lyrics with a close up. Some shots also include the other band member singing.

Relationship between music and visuals?
The only real relationship between the music and the visual in the jump cuts between clips match the beat on the music. There is not illustration on the drums, guitar or bass which isn't typical of an indie rock music video.

Are there close-ups of the artists and star image motifs?
There are a number of close ups of the star image Alex Turner during the live performance of the song. These are used to amplify the lyrics to compare with the narrative and performance.

Is there reference to the notion of looking?
The only references to the notion of looking are the clips of the band in San Francisco. This is to make the clips look unprofessional purposefully to make the clips appears as raw footage of them actually going to San Francisco.

Are there inter-textual references?
I think the video is an inter textual reference of the bands style. They like to create a performance in there music videos to keep them interesting which show disjuncture from the normal 'indie' music videos. The performance however is not as obvious of other of there music videos such as 'fluorescent adolescent'. This could reflect the fact that fluorescent adolescent has almost 22 millions views on YouTube were as fake tales of San Francisco only has 6.5 millions views. This shows the importance of a music video.

Music Video Analysis TWO

Name of track: Brianstorm

Artist: Arctic Monkeys

Genre: Indie Rock
Characteristics: .Artist/band/star image show throughout the video
                               .Usually has a narrative
.Close-ups of the band are common

Relationship between lyrics and visuals?
The lyric of the song are about a man called 'Brian'. This has a relationship with the visuals mainly when an image of the 'Brian' character is shown in the video at the same time as him name is said in the lyrics. The other relationship is when the star image Alex Turner is lip sinking to the lyric. This is don't to amplify them to the audience.

Relationship between music and visuals?
There is a strong relationship between the dancers and the music due to the fact they dance to the beat of the song. Also at the start of the video we see the drums in the music being amplified by the drummer playing the beat.

Are there close-ups of the artists and star image motifs?
There are some close ups of the star image during the video to allow the audience to clearly see the artist singing, showing he is in sink with the song.

Is the video category illustration, disjuncture or amplification?
I think that this music video imparticular is mainly disjuncture. This is because of the dancers being a main part of the video which is uncommon in 'Indie' music video and more common in hip hop or R&B music videos. However I think this is done to make this video stand out from other 'Indie' music videos.

Music Video Analysis ONE

Name of track: Come Alive
Artist: Hanni El Khatib

Genre: 50s/60s, blues
Characteristics: .Artist/band/star image show throughout the video
                            .Usually has a narrative
.Close-ups of the artists are common

Relationship between lyrics and visuals?
The lyrics to the song relate to the video through narrative, I think the anger of the girl character illustrates the lyrics through anger and rebellion. For example the lyrics talk about 'lyin' and 'cheatin' whilst the character is showing anger as she storms through the streets of 'Carolina' pushing over drinks and 'rebelling'. Throughout the video the anger from the girl get worst as Hanni himself disturbingly guides the young girl around her town in relation to the beat of the song getting faster and loader.

Relationship between music and visuals?
I don't feel there is a massive relation between the music and the visual apart from 0:53 - 0:57 in the video where we see a close up of the girl whilst the beat of the music stops. This shows dis-juncture  however I think the Hanni was more interested in a strong narrative of himself and the girl causing havoc.

Are there close-ups of the artists and star image motifs?
There is one close up of the main motif being the girl in the video. This panning close up is during a gap in the music and the lyrics 'aint no love like a love like this cause a love don't exist when a boy wanna play so'. The girls facial expression is showing that she doesn't care about what she is doing and neither about who is watching her. Also in the next clip is where Hanni is introduced after the 'boy wanna play so' lyrics showing that he is going to used her as a 'toy' and later on we she him using her to kill people.

Is there reference to the notion of looking?
The main reference to the notion of looking is the main character, being the young girl, I looking into the camera showing she has no care for who is watching her and the actions she is taking.

Are there inter-textual references?
I think this video is very unique and therefore there is not any inter-textual references from many other videos. The video is similar to Hanni El Khatibs other video in the way that it is very busy including short clips and a lot of them.

Indie rock.

I have decided on an Indie Rock genre for my project. This is a genre of music I am interested in and I feel know the most about. I watch a lot of YouTube videos therefore know many of the conventions they include and also how bands us disjuncture with an out of the ordinary video to grab the attention of its audience and target market.

I want to portray a modern Indie Rock band aimed at a younger target market than most. For this I think a younger looking band would be more relevant and 'up and coming' which the new generation.

Typical conventions of a music video include the standard dark clothing, black skinny jeans, hats and maybe black suits in costume. I think for a more modern stand out band I would change this style to make my band stand out. Some conventions such as having a four membered band with the lead singer in the middle as the star image I would want to keep the same as this is what the target market want to see and can maybe relate too.

Also I have seen that Indie bands generally are seen together almost all of the time in order to promote themselves, therefore I will think about this throughout my digipak, poster and music video.

In my music video I will be using close ups of the band members and instruments, being interesting to my target audience. In this I will have to think about facial expressions and how they portray to the audience. Typically in the Indie Rock genre they tend to keep plain and serious expressions.

The bands instrument will be a factor as all indie rock bands uses guitars, basses, drums and vocals. Not all bands use these in their music video and stick to a narrative however I feel most bands chose to include the instruments. Some bands also chose for themselves not to star in the video. However I think for a first music video I will need to have the band members within the video, to allow the audience to see them and therefore build recognition.

The setting and mise en scene for the music videos in the indie rock genre are normally very urban with a back street setting to go with their style. I will think about if I want to carry out this convention in my video or if I want to use a disjuncture setting to stand out and be different. Also the limits to what is affordable and realistic will affect the choice of location for the filming.

As far as editing straight cuts are most common in indie rock music videos. This goes with the usual fast paced music keeping the audience interested.

The Purpose Of A Music Video

'Music video is a short film or video that accompanies a complete piece of music/song. Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a marketing device intended to promote the sale of music recording. Although the origins of music videos go back to much further, they came into their own in the 1980s, when MTV based their format around the medium, and later with the launch of VH1. The term "music video" first came into popular usage in the early 1980s. Prior to that time, these works were described by various terms including "film insert", "promotional films", "promotional clips" or "film clips".'
(Wikipedia)

What do you think is the most major element of an albums marketing campaign (the different ways in which a bands/artists identity is mediated to an audience)?
I think that an albums marketing campaign would differ depending on the age group of their target market. For example if an artist’s target audience is over 30 then they may choose to promote there album over Facebook rather than twitter. Using the internet and website such as YouTube can be a strong marketing campaign especially when they use a music video to accompany the song. Other ways of marketing their album such as using the radio or even a tv advert can be more difficult to obtain and also more expensive, which can be easier for a more established band/artist but not so much for a new band/artist.
Where have you encountered these elements in your life?
I encounter these element every day wither its watching music videos on YouTube and MTV or following a band on twitter and seeing their posts.
List as many features/conventions of a music video that you can think of.
